DO

Before Operations

  • Complete a thorough pre-use inspection before each shift
  • Verify the load chart is correct for your machine configuration
  • Review the lift plan and understand your role
  • Attend the pre-task briefing and ask questions if unclear
  • Wear all required PPE

During Operations

  • Wear your seatbelt at all times when operating
  • Follow signals from the designated banksman only
  • Keep the boom and load within load chart limits
  • Make smooth, controlled movements
  • Stop immediately if you lose sight of the load or banksman
  • Sound the horn before moving the machine
  • Keep three points of contact when entering/exiting

Communication

  • Confirm signals before acting
  • Report any defects or concerns immediately
  • Stop work and notify supervisor if conditions change
  • Communicate clearly on radio if used

End of Shift

  • Lower the boom fully and secure the machine
  • Report any defects found during operation
  • Complete required documentation
  • Hand over any outstanding issues to the next operator

DON'T

Never

  • Operate without completing the pre-use inspection
  • Exceed the rated load capacity for any reason
  • Bypass or disable any safety device
  • Operate if you are unfit (fatigue, illness, impairment)
  • Lift loads over personnel
  • Allow unauthorized personnel to operate the machine

During Lifting

  • Leave the controls while a load is suspended
  • Make sudden or jerky movements
  • Drag loads sideways or use the boom to pull
  • Lift when ground conditions are unsafe
  • Accept signals from multiple people
  • Operate in high winds above safe limits

General

  • Use your mobile phone while operating
  • Remove PPE in the operational area
  • Skip steps to save time or take shortcuts
  • Ignore warning lights, alarms, or unusual sounds
  • Work alone without a spotter when required
  • Assume the previous operator checked everything

Golden Rules

  1. When in doubt, don't. Stop and ask for guidance.
  2. NO lift is so important that it cannot be done safely.
  3. Everyone has the authority to stop an unsafe operation.
  4. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Trust your instincts.
