Safety Controls & Best Practices
Effective safety controls are the barriers that prevent hazards from causing harm. In side boom operations, we use a combination of engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect workers and assets.

Engineering Controls
Built-in safety features of the machine and equipment:
- Load Moment Indicator (LMI) – Warns of overload conditions
- Anti-Two Block Device – Prevents hook block striking boom tip
- ROPS/FOPS – Rollover and falling object protection
- Emergency Stop – Immediate shutdown capability
- Backup Alarm – Audible warning when reversing
- Boom Angle Indicator – Shows current boom position
⚠️ Never disable, bypass, or tamper with safety devices.
Administrative Controls
Procedures and systems that manage risk:
Permit to Work (PTW)
- Required for all critical lifting operations
- Documents the hazards and controls
- Requires authorization before work begins
- Must be closed out when work is complete
Lift Planning
- All lifts must be planned before execution
- Complex lifts require a formal written lift plan
- Lift plans must be approved by the Lifting Supervisor
Pre-Task Briefings
- Conducted before each shift or task
- Review hazards and controls with the crew
- Confirm roles and communication methods
- Address questions and concerns
Competency Requirements
- Operators must be trained and certified
- Riggers must be competent in rigging practices
- Lifting Supervisors must be formally appointed
- All personnel must complete site induction
Exclusion Zones
An exclusion zone must be established around all lifting operations. This is the area where personnel are not permitted during the lift.
- Marked with barriers, tape, or cones
- Enforced by the banksman or dedicated watchman
- Covers the potential fall zone of the load
- Extends to the swing path of boom and load
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Minimum PPE requirements for side boom operations:
- Hard Hat – Protects against falling objects
- Safety Boots – Steel toe, slip-resistant
- High-Visibility Vest – Ensures visibility to operators
- Safety Glasses – Protects eyes from debris
- Gloves – Protects hands during rigging work
- Hearing Protection – If noise exceeds safe levels
✅ Best Practices Summary
- Never bypass or disable safety devices
- Always work within the permit system
- Plan every lift before execution
- Conduct pre-task briefings with the crew
- Establish and enforce exclusion zones
- Wear all required PPE at all times
- Stop work if conditions become unsafe
