Lifting & Pipe Laying Operations

Pipe laying is the core operation for side boom tractors. This involves lifting pipe sections from stockpiles or transport vehicles, positioning them over open trenches, and lowering them into position for welding and coating operations.

All pipe laying operations must be planned and supervised by a competentLifting Supervisor. Communication between operators and ground crew is critical for safe operations.

Lift Planning

Before any lift, the following must be confirmed:

  • Load Weight – Verified pipe section weight
  • Rigging Configuration – Slings, shackles, pipe hooks
  • Ground Conditions – Assessed and prepared
  • Working Radius – Calculated for all lift phases
  • Load Chart Verification – Capacity confirmed at all positions
  • Exclusion Zones – Established and barricaded
  • Communication Plan – Signals agreed between all parties

Tandem Lifting

Large pipe sections require multiple side boom tractors working together in atandem lift. This requires:

  • Detailed lift plan with load sharing calculations
  • Designated Lead Operator who controls the lift sequence
  • Synchronized boom movements by all machines
  • Clear communication protocol (radio or signals)
  • All machines rated for their share of the load
⚠️ Tandem lifts are higher-risk operations and typically require a formal lift plan and Permit to Work (PTW).

Standard Lift Sequence

  1. Pre-Lift Briefing – All personnel informed of the plan
  2. Attach Rigging – Secure connection to the pipe
  3. Take Up Slack – Slowly tension the rigging
  4. Lift Check – Raise slightly, check stability and balance
  5. Clear Area – Confirm exclusion zone is clear
  6. Lift and Position – Controlled lift to required position
  7. Lower into Trench – Slow, controlled descent
  8. Release Load – Only when pipe is fully supported
  9. Remove Rigging – When safe to approach

Banksman (Signal Person) Communication

The Banksman is the primary communication link between the operator and the ground crew. Standard hand signals must be used:

  • Hoist Up – Forearm vertical, forefinger pointing up, rotate hand
  • Lower Load – Arm extended down, forefinger pointing down, rotate hand
  • Stop – Arm extended, palm down, move arm back and forth
  • Emergency Stop – Both arms extended, palms down, move rapidly
  • Boom Up – Arm extended, fingers closed, thumb pointing up
  • Boom Down – Arm extended, fingers closed, thumb pointing down
Only one person should give signals to the operator, except for Emergency Stop which anyone can give.

✅ Safe Operations Checklist

  • Verify load chart capacity before each lift
  • Maintain clear communication with banksman
  • Keep exclusion zones clear throughout the lift
  • Never carry loads over personnel
  • Use tag lines to control load swing
  • Make smooth, controlled movements
  • Lower boom when traveling with a load
